Work Experience
2021-Now: Associate Professor in Physics, Department of Physics, University of Warwick, UK
- Establishing a new research group;
- Develop physics-based computational imaging;
- Implement and develop in-situ cryogenic, and liquid electron microscopy;
2012-2021: Professor in College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Nanjing University (南京大学,现代工程与应用学院)
- Established an atomic-resolution characterization research facility, called Sub-Atomic Resolution Electron Microscopy Laboratory. The laboratory holds two high-end microscopes one of which is a double aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope, Titan3 Cubed 60-300 with Monochrometer, SuperEDS and Dual EELS
- Established and lead a research group of 15 members working on the following projects:
- Develop 2D and 3D low dose electron diffractive imaging for bio-materials at a cryo-state;
- Develop computational 3D tilted tomography and optical sectioning;
- Develop in-situ liquid and electric-optical electron microscopy;
- Atomic characterization of 2D thin films and low-dimensional materials;
- Lecturing TEM for Materials Characterization for undergraduates and postgraduates in English.
- Teaching and training postdocs, researchers, faculties and external visitors of theory and operation of EM.
2008-2012: Research Fellow in the Department of Materials, University of Oxford, UK
- Developed a nanoscale 3D imaging methodology called scanning confocal electron microscopy (SCEM) on a double aberration-corrected TEM with an energy filter:
- Invented and patented 3D nanoscale SCEM chemical mapping;
- Proved the principle of 3D imaging using the SCEM;
- Developed and expand to a different concept of 3D SCEM modes (BF, ADF and EF);
- Applied the SCEM successfully to drug delivery materials and understood their 3D structure.
2006-2008: Research Associate in SuperSTEM Laboratory, Science and Technology Facilities Council Laboratory, Warrington, UK
- Novel imaging methods developing and software programming (Matlab and DM scripting) ;
- Day-to-day operating and maintaining two world-leading aberration-corrected STEMs (SuperSTEM I and II); Providing technical supports and expertise solutions to the users.
Education and Qualifications
2003-2006: PhD in Engineering, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK
- 3D quantitative characterization of the indium distribution within the InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) buried in a laser structure by combining HAADF imaging and EELS techniques at a near-atomic resolution on SuperSTEM I.
- Developed a novel “Stereographic Visibility Spherical Bands” to calculate the lattice contrast visibility of nano-crystalline material in HAADF image from the stereographic projection in the geometric aspects. The visualization software has been published as teaching material on http://www.matter.org.uk/stereography/.
